17.8 degrees: on Christmas Day it was warmer in Upper Austria than at Easter

Spring fever instead of a white Christmas in Upper Austria: The weather on Christmas Day was far too warm for the time of year. Up to 17.8 degrees, measured in Weyer (Steyr-Land district), temperatures rose on Christmas Day. According to Geosphere Austria (formerly ZAMG), the 4,000-person community in the Traunviertel was the third warmest place in the whole of Germany. Higher values were only measured in Wiener Neustadt (18.6 degrees) and Berndorf in the Vienna Woods (18.3 degrees). There was also a hint of spring in the air in the state capital: at 13.3 degrees, the people of Linz were able to safely leave their hats, gloves and scarves at home during their family walk.

For comparison: At Easter this year it was a good ten degrees less in Weyer. In Linz on April 9th it was about three degrees colder than at Christmas. Is that already a record? Not quite. According to data from Geosphere Austria, the highest value ever measured since recording began in Austria was 20.3 degrees in December, measured on December 16, 1989 in Micheldorf (Kirchdorf an der Krems district). It was a cozy 16.5 degrees there on Monday.

It was also unusually warm in the mountains: with stormy westerly winds with gusts of around 120 km/h, the measuring station on Feuerkogel at an altitude of 1,620 meters recorded at least 6.9 degrees at midday. At the Dachstein at 2520 meters the temperatures were still just in the plus range at 1.1 degrees.

The warmest places in Upper Austria on December 25th, 2023:

  1. Weyer: 17.8 degrees

This is what the weather will be like in the coming days

Has spring now come to stay? According to Geosphere Austria, at least for the next few days there are still signs of a thaw – much too warm for the time of year. On St. Stephen’s Day there will be some scattered cloud cover in the morning with longer sunny phases. With highs of 6 to 12 degrees, it will be a little cooler than on Monday.

The meteorologists are predicting something similar for Wednesday: With temperatures of 7 to 11 degrees, the sun will shine at least twice and the wind will only blow weakly. No significant temperature changes are foreseeable for the second half of the week: Although a weak front from the west will reach the state on Thursday, temperatures will still be between 6 and 11 degrees. The cloud cover will be thicker, but it should remain dry.
