By December 17th, 384 people had lost their lives on Austria’s roads. In the same period there were a total of 362 in 2022, a total of 350 in 2021 and a total of 337 in 2020.
Most recently, in 2019, there were 400 traffic deaths in the comparable period up to December 17th, significantly more than this year. In all of 2019, 416 people died in accidents on domestic roads. Since 2020, the total number has declined more sharply due to the corona pandemic.
In a federal state comparison, the number of traffic deaths increased significantly this year, especially in Salzburg, with a total of 35 traffic deaths (2022: 19). In Carinthia there are also eight more deaths than in the previous year (20). In Tyrol there was an increase from 29 to 35 traffic deaths in 2023, in Styria from 70 to 78. The number fell in the other federal states.
