6 Killed in Kraków Shooting Motivated by Far-Right Views, Authorities Say

“There is something profoundly precious about being in a country where such evil remains so foreign to everyday life,” U.S. Ambassador to Poland Tom Rose said, reflecting the national shock after a gunman killed six people in Kraków’s Main Market Square on Saturday, November 7, 2026.

NBC News reported that the midday mass shooting, Poland’s deadliest in decades, left four women and two men dead while injuring 16 others.

The alleged attacker, a Polish national in his mid-20s from Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, acted alone while wearing military-style clothing and using a long gun, according to details provided by Kraków police spokesperson Katarzyna Cisło to TVN24 and covered by CNN. Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński stated that the suspect held ultranationalistic views and was fascinated by far-right ideologies.

Prior to the market square attack, three additional bodies—identified by police as the suspect’s mother, father, and sister—were discovered inside his home in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, roughly 120 miles northeast of Kraków, as reported by CNN and CBS News.

The suspect was shot by police at the scene and remains in critical condition in the hospital, regional governor Krzysztof Klęczar told a news conference.

Quick-thinking bystanders and medical professionals provided critical aid during the chaos. Professor Michał Pędziwiatr and Dr. Mateusz Wierdak, two surgeons having lunch nearby with their families, rushed to the scene. BBC reported that Wierdak packed bandages directly into the chest of the wounded police officer, which a colleague stated undoubtedly saved his life.

Tourists visiting the historic square described scenes of terror as the gunman drove through the area and opened fire. Taylor Dorfmeister, a 21-year-old American student visiting from Italy, told NBC News that he hid in a dead-end apartment building stairwell while gunshots echoed nearby.

Marie-Ange Collaer, visiting from Brussels, posted on Facebook that her family ran for their lives and lay on the floor of a shop to escape the flying bullets.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk condemned the violence, while leaders including U.K. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed solidarity with Poland. In response to the tragedy, the Polish Interior Ministry declared two national days of mourning for November 8 and 9, and Kraków Mayor Łukasz Gibała announced that the city would remain in official mourning until Wednesday.
