Electronics company Apple is facing tax claims of nearly $98 million in Japan over a quantity of fee-free device sales to foreign tourists.
Japanese reports said that the tax-free shopping rules for foreigners who reside in Japan for less than 6 months do not apply to purchases made for the purpose of resale.
She explained that one transaction in an Apple store in Japan witnessed a person purchasing hundreds of devices produced by Apple at once, which indicates that these purchases were made for the purpose of resale, and therefore do not enjoy tax exemption for foreigners, according to the German.
Apple stopped tax-free sales in Japan last June and is believed to have submitted an amended tax return to Japanese authorities.
