The Front for a Pan-African Popular Anti-Imperialist Revolution (FRAPP) launched the “Path of Liberation” program. According to a press release, this initiative constitutes a “major communication and influence campaign” set up to demand the release of political detainees, including Ousmane Sonko, the main opponent of President Macky Sall’s regime.

The press release stresses that this approach is aimed not only at national opinion, but also at the international community. In this context, the Senegalese government is criticized for its alleged tendency to criminalize political engagement. Visits to the families of the victims and political detainees are scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday 17 August. This initiative will be followed by a citizens’ conference on the state of the rule of law and democracy in Senegal the following day, Friday 18 August.

Large-scale peaceful rallies will then be organized in all the departments of the country. The objective is to “bring together all the active forces of the Nation to obtain the release of political prisoners” and to raise national and international awareness of the arbitrariness of these detentions. According to the press release, the FRAPP will be supported in this process by the Yewwi Askan Wi (Yaw, opposition) coalition as well as by various civil society organisations.
