The first round of the NFL draft takes place on Friday night. 32 players are drafted into the best football league in the world. Venue is Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The draft is about allowing the weakest NFL teams to pick the best players out of college. This is how the league should remain balanced.
One of the players likely to get drafted in the first round is Matt Corral – a quarterback. This year, the quarterback class is probably weaker than in previous years, but there are numerous teams looking for their playmaker for the years to come. The 23-year-old has been active for the Ole Miss Rebels since 2018 and is one of the supposedly greatest talents.
But his career path has not been ideal. In high school he played for Oaks Christian School in California. After a fight, he decided to change schools. Involved in the brawl: Tristan Gretzky, the son of NHL legend Wayne Gretzky, possibly the greatest hockey player of all time. After changing schools, Corral said: Oaks Christian School is for “rich kids who never have to work in their lives.”
In terms of sport, he did not let the change affect him. He also delivered at his new school, earning him a place at Ole Miss, the school that also hosted two-time Superbowl champion Eli Manning. Corral is considered an agile quarterback, i.e. one who is particularly good on foot. He also has good timing when throwing. The problem, according to the scouts: he often misses seeing the free teammates and is considered prone to injury.
If he gets drafted in the first round, he’s bound to make a lot of money. As an example: The last pick in the first round in 2021 received a contract for eleven million francs. There was also a signing bonus of five million. According to US media, the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints are all interested in Corral.
