Al-Hilal faces Al-Wehda this evening in the King’s Cup final
Ramon Diaz, coach of Al-Hilal, surprised everyone by excluding striker Odion Ighalo from the starting line-up to face Al-Wahda this evening, Friday, in the final of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Cup.
The coach, who was recently criticized for losing the AFC Champions League final, did not include Saleh Al-Shehri or Abdullah Al-Hamdan instead of the Nigerian striker, but rather chose to play with an apparently imaginary striker, using Luciano Vietto at the front of the attack, alongside Michel and Musa Mariga.
This prompted some to assert that the exclusion of Ighalo comes as part of Diaz’s desire to adopt a new style of attack by relying on the imaginary striker, but others went on to believe that the coach is punishing Ighalo for his low level, especially the easy opportunity he missed against Urawa Red Diamonds in the second leg of the Asian Final on Saitama Stadium 2002 And it almost turned things around in favor of the leader in the match that ended with his loss 1-0.
Al-Hilal was missing his Saudi star, Salem Al-Dossari, and his captain, Salman Al-Faraj, was injured. Diaz chose to push veteran Muhammad Al-Buraik on the right of the defense instead of Saud Abdul-Hamid, while Yasser Al-Shahrani returned to occupy the left side.
It is noteworthy that Al-Hilal has nothing but the King’s Cup to save its zero season so far, as it lost the Saudi Super Cup, the Club World Cup and the AFC Champions League, and was excluded from the competition for the Saudi Roshen League.
