Aluminum-Doped Coronene May Detect Limonene as CKD Biomarker

The findings suggest that aluminum-doped coronene, in particular, offers a selective binding affinity for limonene compared to other common molecular interferents.

Aluminum-Doped Coronene Shows Strong Binding Preference for Limonene

The study, which utilized B97D/6-31G(d) and ωB97XD/6-31G(d) density functional theory, evaluated the interaction between limonene and pristine coronene, as well as derivatives doped with aluminum and zinc. In CPCM water, the BSSE-corrected adsorption energies were calculated at −44.99 and −43.72 kcal.mol−1 for aluminum-doped coronene, compared to −13.04 and −18.67 kcal.mol−1 for the zinc-doped equivalent.

In a limited B97D competition screen, the aluminum-doped platform demonstrated an energetic preference for limonene over potential contaminants, including water, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and methane. Frequency-derived adsorption free energies further suggest that heating the material to 498 K significantly influences recovery times, lowering estimates for aluminum-doped platforms to 98.1 and 9.10 seconds. Researchers also utilized Mulliken and NBO natural-population analyses, which indicated that charge flows from the limonene to the metal-doped platforms, contrasting with the flow from coronene to limonene observed on pristine coronene. The findings require further evaluation through broader competitive adsorption tests, global structure searches, transport calculations, and eventual experimental validation.

Global Health Burden Rises Significantly over Three Decades

Clinical challenges are compounded by the fact that early stages of CKM syndrome are often silent, while factors such as obesity, impaired kidney function, and recent exercise can alter the interpretation of commonly used biomarkers.

The global public-health burden remains significant. Compared with 1990, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) related to these health challenges increased from approximately 320 million to 437 million, while deaths rose from 13.1 million to 19.2 million. Current efforts to address these trends include a narrative review informed by structured literature searches, which evaluates biomarkers across screening, risk stratification, and treatment monitoring.

Emerging biomarkers, such as kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1), NGAL, soluble tumour necrosis factor receptors, and galectin-3, generally require additional assays and remain predominantly adjunctive or investigational. Various derived indices—such as eGDR, TyG derivatives, and lipid indices—may refine metabolic phenotyping but should not independently determine treatment.

Applications of Nanomaterials

Beyond coronene, research has explored various two-dimensional systems, including boron nitride, silicene, and phosphorene, for distinct biomedical applications. Other studies have investigated the use of heteroatom doping, such as aluminum, to modulate the molecular adsorption properties of boron nitride nanotubes and nanocages. These complementary analyses provide molecular-level insights into how nanostructured systems can be optimized for sensing and therapeutic delivery.
