Nikita Kucherov formally requests trade from Tampa Bay Lightning

“It was never about the money for me,” said Nikita Kucherov, the Tampa Bay Lightning star who has formally requested a trade from the organization. The Hart Trophy winner, who can become an unrestricted free agent after this season, cited a breakdown in communication and a lack of respect as the primary drivers behind his decision to move on from the only team he has played for in his 14-year career.

Kucherov, 33, revealed that he and the Lightning had only two conversations regarding a contract extension over the last four months. His agent, Dan Milstein, confirmed that while he remains on good terms with general manager Julien BriseBois, the relationship between the player and the club has reached a point where a departure is necessary. “Things went horribly wrong beyond the repair probably at this point in time, and it’s unfortunate but it’s at the conclusion of the season it’s time to move on,” Milstein stated.

A Decorated Career in Tampa

During his tenure, he has earned the Hart Trophy twice (2019, 2026) and the Art Ross Trophy three times (2019, 2024, 2025). On October 24, he surpassed Steven Stamkos to become the franchise’s all-time leading scorer, currently holding 1,142 points in 892 games.

Kucherov Declines to Re-Sign and Provides Trade List

Despite the impasse, Kucherov remains eligible to sign a new deal, though he has informed the team he will not re-sign. As part of his contract, the veteran winger must provide the Lightning with a list of 10 teams to which he would approve a trade.

The Lightning’s Official Stance

Despite the trade request, the Tampa Bay Lightning have maintained that they are not looking to part ways with their leading scorer. Following a meeting in Nashville last Friday involving Kucherov, his agent, and team leadership, general manager Julien BriseBois released a statement declaring that the club unequivocally have no intention of trading Nikita. Coach Jon Cooper echoed this sentiment, telling reporters that the forward remains a committed member of the roster.

Players and League Observers Discuss Movement Trends

The request has sparked broader discussions regarding player movement across the league. Teammate Brandon Hagel noted that while such situations are difficult, they are a reality of the sport, stating, “Those guys are my family, and this will never change.” Meanwhile, some observers have noted that the trend of high-profile trade demands has extended to players like Connor Hellebuyck, Brady Tkachuk, Dylan Larkin, Nikita Kucherov, and Shane Wright, leading to calls for the league and the NHLPA to address the current climate.

For now, Kucherov continues to suit up for the Lightning, noting, “For now, I’m part of this team, and I will do anything I can to help my teammates win.” When asked if he saw a path to remaining in Tampa Bay long-term, the forward’s response was brief: “I make my request, and yeah …”
