Angels for “angels”, or How to sow seeds of goodness

Different paths lead children to orphanages. Parents’ drunkenness or drug addiction, a congenital incurable disease due to which the baby was abandoned in the maternity hospital – life stories are different, but always dramatic. It is clear that the state and self-government do not abandon orphans with living parents: living in a special institution, they are provided with everything that is necessary to satisfy their basic needs – food, clothing, warmth, a roof over their heads. They are taught, dressed and put on shoes, treated if they are sick – in a word, they are taken care of.

But does this mean that these guys have everything “in chocolate”?

– Unfortunately, this is not at all true. – Says the head of the public charity organization “Angel Latvija” Alexander Elbur, – In fact, according to the law, the state or self-government is obliged to provide children who, for one reason or another, are left without parental care, with everything they need. However, the concept of “everything you need” is very flexible. I traveled to many local governments, got acquainted with the situation in children’s institutions, talked with employees – in a word, I saw everything with my own eyes from the inside. It is clear that where the local governments are richer – for example, Riga, Liepaja – everything is very good. The children live in very decent conditions, especially when compared with how they lived in their families. Although, of course, even the best conditions in an orphanage cannot be compared with the life of a child in a loving family.

But if self-government is not yet very rich, then it really needs help. Particularly acute is the issue of “excesses”, which are so necessary for any child in order to grow up truly happy: toys that belong to him personally, beautiful clothes, books, entertainment… People who have a decent income live on their own and raise children under normal conditions, sometimes you can’t even imagine that some child might lack things that seem to you to be something basic!



According to Alexander, their public organization was created precisely with the goal of helping children who are being brought up in orphanages. In particular, within the framework of the angellatvija.lv project, donations are collected via SMS, which are then directly sent to specific addresses: Valmiera SOS Bērnu ciemats (Valmiera SOS Children’s Village – Ganību 3, Valmiera, Valmieras nov., LV-4201) and Children’s Home-Shelter “Come” (Priedīte, bērnu nams-patversme, Turaidas 36, Daugavpils, LV-5417).

– For what purposes to spend the funds collected with our help, employees of institutions that work directly with children decide, – Alexander explains. – They know better what children need at that particular time. For example, part of the money last year in Valmiera was spent on buying books, and part on children’s cultural and entertainment events. But the funds can also be spent on something else – for example, on purchasing educational games, sports equipment, paying for foreign language training, organizing excursions, career guidance events, etc.

To the question that in the current conditions of economic instability, post-Covid crisis, inflation, etc., many people, even those who want to help those in need, cannot always afford it, Alexander answers this way:

– People sometimes tend to think in such categories: I can’t donate a lot, but it’s inconvenient to donate a little. But believe me: there are NO small donations! Even for one euro you can buy something for someone in need, but without this one euro you definitely can’t buy anything. Therefore, there is no need to be shy: even if you have limited financial resources and cannot donate a large amount, you can always allocate at least some to help someone who is poorer than you. And even with small amounts, sometimes it is possible to help effectively – if, of course, this help is spent honestly and wisely. So, if there is an opportunity and desire to do something good, we can advise where any help will be gladly accepted. A person can even go to the address we provide himself and see how the children live.
