Annular Eclipse in Colombia: How to Safely Observe and Enjoy the Phenomenon

2023-10-15 03:18:12

This Saturday, October 14, the moon will come between the Sun and the Earth, causing an annular eclipse.

This astronomical event, according to the Medellín Planetarium, has not been visible in Colombia for 25 years and will not occur again until 2028.

According to the entity, the country is in a favorable position to be able to observe this phenomenon at a good height above the horizon, so millions of people will be able to enjoy it.

“The eclipse will be visible throughout Colombia, however, only from the cities located in the annularity strip will the ring of fire be seen. Some of these cities are Nuquí in Chocó, Trujillo and Tuluá in the Valle del Cauca, San Vicente del Caguán in Caquetá and La Pedrera in the Amazon. Other towns with good locations to observe the phenomenon are Buenaventura, Buga, Cali, Palmira, Cartago, Campoalegre, Gigante, Hobo, Neiva and Paicol,” the Planetarium indicated.

Despite not being in the annularity zone, the Planetarium indicated that in the capital of Antioquia the Moon will be seen partially covering the Sun, by 92.6%.

“This means that it will get dark enough to see some stars and the decrease in temperature will even be noticeable, especially if the day is clear and sunny,” the entity reported.

In Medellín the eclipse will begin at 11:41 am with the Sun at 77° above the eastern horizon, the maximum (moment of maximum occultation) will arrive at 1:28:54 pm and will end at 3:15:17 pm with the Sun at a height of 38° falling on the west.

In total the event lasts a little more than 3 and a half hours.

According to information from ‘NatGeo’, the solar eclipse emits radiation that, in the worst case, could permanently damage the retina.

In an annular eclipse, explains the Planetarium, the Moon does not completely cover the Sun as happens in a total eclipse, “this is because the Moon is at its apogee, that is, at the maximum distance from the Earth in its orbit Instead, it is positioned in front of it and a ring of light, commonly known as a ‘ring of fire’, forms around it.

Solar eclipse: Recommendations

– You should never look at the Sun without adequate protection. Sunlight is very intense and can cause permanent damage to the eyes. In no case can this eclipse be observed with the naked eye, as happens with total eclipses.

– Use special glasses for eclipses. These have a filter that blocks harmful sunlight. They should be obtained from distribution centers specialized in astronomy instruments, such as planetarium stores, and you should look for them to be ISO 12312-2 certified.

Another safe method is to look through welding glass with a DIN 14 or higher graduation.

– Do not use ordinary sunglasses, photographic film, x-rays, smoked glass, CDs, food packaging, mirrors or buckets of water. These methods can be dangerous to your eyesight.

– Do not look at the Sun through a camera, telescope, binoculars or other device. These can concentrate sunlight and cause permanent damage to the eyes. To use optical instruments you must have special filters made of appropriate materials.

Observing the eclipse reflected in water or other surfaces does not reduce the risk of direct observation. The safe way to do this is through projection.

You can use projection instruments made with homemade materials.
