Answers the reader: – I have defended Aalborg’s interests

This is a discussion post. The post is an expression of the writer’s own position.

Thank you for your reader’s letter about our “Danish gold”, namely our drinking water, Keld.

Overall, I do not believe that the 3rd Limfjord connection will harm our drinking water interests, so I do not agree with that premise.

I support the 3rd Limfjord connection, as it will be a huge gain for the whole of North Jutland, as far too many people are queuing at the Limfjord Tunnel today.

Growth, jobs and settlement all depend on citizens and goods being able to cross the Limfjord.

I look after both water and transport, which in my view are fundamental values in a modern society. Many experts also agree. So it’s not an either or. It is a both and.

I agree with you that there must be clean drinking water for our children.

As chairman of DANVA, I have been very involved in protecting Denmark’s drinking water – and of course also Aalborg’s. I am proud of that, and the entire social democratic city council group in Aalborg remains very concerned about this important and long-term strategy.

Away with long queues – up with forest

At the same time, we want to ensure good and optimal transport structures in our area, so that the people of North Jutland do not have to spend too much time waiting in long queues.

The 3rd Limfjord connection across Egholm is the best solution both in terms of traffic and social economy. This has been investigated and concluded by the Road Directorate several times.

I find that concerns have been taken seriously and thoroughly investigated by the Road Directorate.

Replacement nature will be, among other things, established 1:2, and here in Aalborg Municipality we have made the Road Directorate aware that we want nature to remain in Aalborg Municipality, and that that nature can be used precisely for groundwater protection with afforestation etc.

Afforestation in local areas gives citizens ownership because it provides both groundwater protection, more nature and can be used recreationally. The planned solution across Egholm can therefore contribute to groundwater protection in Aalborg.

And how do we ensure that?

We protect drinking water

I have defended Aalborg’s interests with the consultation response that we have sent from Aalborg Municipality to the Directorate of Roads.

We emphasize in the response to the consultation that Aalborg Municipality wants construction solutions that we have good experience with from other places in the municipality, where motorways and roads are built close to drinking water interests, and that do not harm our drinking water.

It is e.g. valid today at the E45 around Visse.

The Social Democracy in Aalborg Municipality supports the municipality’s action plans as a tool for groundwater protection. We have done this systematically since 1998.

The association Groundwater Cooperation Aalborg has also helped to protect approx. 1,500 hectares of land.

Aalborg Municipality is thus one of Denmark’s leading municipalities in protecting groundwater.

Our position in relation to the drinking water interests is that we must have protected larger contiguous areas through groundwater parks of 200,000 hectares, where the groundwater is formed.

It must be possible to expropriate land for groundwater protection. And then we must ask ourselves the question whether the size of the compensation is not out of proportion.

The water issue had a good impact on the Finance Act for 2022 via the establishment of a drinking water fund, so there is political action, but we must act both locally, nationally and internationally to look after our Danish gold.

I work for the everyday life of the people of North Jutland – both when it comes to water and transport.
