Once the judge approves the preliminary agreement, they will pay settlements to customers in California, Florida, New York, Washington, New Jersey, Michigan and Illinois who need repairs. As part of the settlement, Apple doesn’t need to admit any wrongdoing (plaintiffs allege it deliberately concealed a design flaw), but it still needs to continue to provide free keyboard repairs for four years after consumers buy the phone.
But like many class action lawsuits, most of the MacBook owners involved in this case may not end up getting high compensation. After deducting the $15 million in fees to be paid to attorneys, the remaining distributable settlement isn’t a huge amount. According to lawyers, users who have repeatedly replaced their keyboards can expect to receive US$395 in damages. If you only completely change the keyboard once, the amount you can get is US$125. If you only change a few keys, you can only receive US$50.
