Argentina weather brings returning heat and storm alerts this week

Argentina is breaking free from an extended siege of clouds, rain, and snow as stabilizing high-pressure systems finally push across the country, halting a dramatic drop in temperatures that triggered freezing morning conditions.

Weekend Freeze Grips Patagonia and the Pampas

The meteorological shift follows a weekend marked by notable cold. The lowest temperatures were recorded in the eastern Patagonia region, where the mercury hovered near 0 °C, and across the Pampas region, where readings approached 5 °C. By Sunday afternoon, skies began to clear over the west-central provinces, allowing sunshine to break through days of persistent cloud cover and precipitation.

High-Pressure Dominance and Regional Storm Warnings

During the first half of the week, high-pressure systems will dominate the eastern Patagonia, the Pampas, and large portions of northern Argentina. This atmospheric setup guarantees predominantly stable conditions, lower humidity, and abundant sunshine. However, this stability will not be universal, as passing disturbances continue to threaten specific provinces with localized weather hazards.

Meteorologists track a cold front advancing across central and southern Patagonia, where the boundary between cold air and incoming warm, humid air will trigger scattered showers and thunderstorms. The National Meteorological Service has issued formal storm warnings for the entire eastern section of Santa Cruz, anticipating heavy rainfall over short periods, localized hail, and strong wind gusts. Forecasters project accumulated precipitation totals between 15 and 30 millimeters, with potential for higher amounts in isolated areas.

A parallel weather alert covers Mendoza, where forecasters expect isolated storms to intensify as the week progresses. By late Monday and into Tuesday, these unsettled conditions will spread with reduced intensity into parts of San Luis, Córdoba, and La Pampa, eventually reaching La Rioja, Catamarca, and Tucumán. Additional rounds of showers and thunderstorms are slated for the Pampas and northwestern provinces by Wednesday and Thursday.

The Thermal Rebound and Northern Heat Surge

While Monday maintains a relatively cool profile driven by southerly winds, a significant thermal rebound begins Tuesday. Enhanced northern wind circulation and clear skies will drive a marked diurnal temperature range, maintaining crisp mornings that require warm clothing while pushing afternoon temperatures upward.

Late-October Heat Resets the Season

The most pronounced warming trend arrives Wednesday onward. Afternoon readings are expected to exceed 24 °C across Patagonia and the central plains, with the southern and eastern sectors of Buenos Aires Province serving as exceptions due to marine air circulation keeping conditions moderate. In the northern provinces, temperatures will climb rapidly, approaching and exceeding 30 °C as late-October heat reasserts itself.

This upward temperature swing marks the first clear indicator of seasonal warmth returning following weeks of unseasonably cool weather. Residents across the affected provinces are advised to monitor updated forecasts as the week unfolds and storm alerts remain active.
