Artificial Intelligence can be used as an ally for city security

This month, the Connected Smart Cities 2023 ranking was released, which maps the cities with the greatest development potential in Brazil. Uberlândia, in the interior of Minas Gerais, rose two positions compared to last year’s position. The city is the 30th in the country in the study carried out by Urban Systems with another 655 municipalities with a population above 50 thousand inhabitants. If only cities with populations between 500,000 and 1 million inhabitants are considered, the city appears as the 10th most connected in Brazil. The complete ranking can be accessed by hereby filling out a form.

The research evaluated 74 indicators across 11 thematic axes: Mobility, Urbanism, Environment, Technology and Innovation, Economy, Education, Health, Security, Entrepreneurship, Governance and Energy. The final score was defined by the sum of three weight scales for the dichotomous indicators (yes or no) – weight 0.5; that cover a rating or evaluation scale – weight 0.8; and numerical, scale, growth or percentage – weight 1, distributing a total of 69 points. Uberlândia reached 32,130.

José Inácio Pereira, superintendent director of the planned neighborhood Granja Marileusa in Uberlândia, believes that the city’s evolution in this ranking is an achievement that can go even further. “When we break down the study we realize that we are among the top 30 in Urbanism (26th), Mobility (26th) and Technology and Information (23rd), but the city is still not in the top 100 in terms of security, for example”.

The executive states that developers can be great partners for the municipality with initiatives like the one that Granja Marileusa implemented more than two years ago, the Security 4.0which uses Artificial Intelligence as an ally of the community and its surroundings.

Through the Association of Residents and Companies (AME), Granja Marileusa invested in a large structure to be the first community in Uberlândia to provide data in a structured and autonomous way via Artificial Intelligence (AI) for monitoring by the Military Police Operations Center – future Integrated Command and Control Center (CICC) of the 9th Integrated Public Security Region. Surveillance cameras are high resolution, specially calibrated for each hour of the day or night, for example.

Felipe Fernandes Pereira CEO of Ivare, an Uberlandian company partner in implementing the system, explains that when the algorithms work, the actions are more assertive. This is the difference between having a camera on your door and having it integrated in real time with the Military Police. In this way, the neighborhood provides organized data to the PM, each new piece of information is an algorithm, which transforms data into information.

“This processed information will direct the next action assertively. It is the neural network, that is, each camera is a neuron that, made available for geoprocessing, increases the action of the intelligent digital brain, which will also be monitored by the human eye”, said Felipe Pereira.

José Inácio states that a safe neighborhood allows people to live a more intense day-to-day life with the freedom to come and go and, above all, enjoy the common spaces in the region. “For a technology to be truly impactful, it needs to directly interfere with people’s well-being and that is our main focus.”
