India’s Asian Games kabaddi champions and shooting medallists arrived at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, greeted by festive crowds, traditional dhols, and security force bands.
A Festive Homecoming at IGI Airport
The arrival hall of New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport transformed into a vibrant arena of celebration as family members, neighbors, and fellow athletes gathered long before the scheduled touch-down. When the gold-winning men’s and women’s kabaddi squads finally emerged, the waiting crowd erupted into cheers against the heavy, rhythmic beat of traditional dhols.
Defending National Dominance in Kabaddi
Speaking to reporters amid the celebrations, Kumar emphasized the internal drive that propelled the team forward.
“High morale led us to the gold. I am very happy to see this kind of reception. I hope Kabaddi becomes an Olympic sport one day,” Sunil Kumar said, highlighting aspirations for global expansion.
“We have shown yet again that we are the best kabaddi-playing nation in the world. Retaining the title is very pleasing. I am proud of my boys. Our team showcased tremendous heart, soul and game to win the deserving gold.”
Overcoming Resistance in the Women’s Bracket
The women’s kabaddi squad faced a stern test against Iran in the final match, but captain Pushpa Rana noted that experience and composure carried her team across the finish line. Despite stiff tactical resistance, the squad delivered under intense pressure.
“Our opponent really fought well but we were the better team in terms of both talent and experience. Yes, the sport is becoming popular worldwide though India is thoroughly dominating it,” Pushpa Rana explained.
“It’s high time that kabaddi is included in the Commonwealth Games and hopefully in the Olympics one day.”
Meanwhile, women’s team player Manisha Kumari received a special greeting from a Border Security Force band at the terminal, acknowledging the institution’s backing. “I am ever grateful to the BSF for their unrelenting support for me. We had no pressure. We went in determined to win the gold and we did it,” Kumari stated.
Shooting Squad Extends the Celebration
Just as the initial wave of kabaddi celebrations began to disperse toward regional destinations, the arrival of the Indian shooting contingent sparked a fresh round of cheers from the lingering crowd. At the center of attention were Kamaljeet Singh and Suruchi Singh, who captured the gold medal in the fiercely contested 10m air pistol mixed team event.
“It was not easy to win a 10m air pistol mixed gold. It was tough and we held on to our nerves. I am happy for Suruchi who showed some great heart and tremendous form as we clinched the top honour,” Kamaljeet noted.
“It’s slowly sinking in. I am extremely happy to win the gold in mixed pair. This will inspire me to do better in the future. India is very strong in this event and we hope to bag another medal in the Olympics in this category,” Suruchi remarked.
