The electric car is not just about the duel between Western and Asian manufacturers. Many emerging startups, and sometimes from countries not associated with the automobile. New example, an unprecedented firm comes to us from the other side of the Mediterranean.

If its head office is in London, the heart of Atlas is in Morocco, in Tangier. Founded by two locals, Mohammed Yehya El Bakkali and Mohammed Hicham Senhaji Hannoun, it wants to launch the first electric car designed and manufactured in Africa.

A first teaser on the official site shows a form of crossover. But the car will not be a bunch of gadgets on wheels, we learn via the media Autocar. A co-founder specifies that this Anglo-Moroccan vehicle “will only use technologies that the customer needs” et “that everything else will be excluded”.

However, this Atlas lacks a technical basis, seeking a partner. Perhaps Renault and Stellantis, already present in Morocco with Dacia or the Citroën Ami, would be ideal candidates. The Chinese BYD is another player that has invested in the country, with a future factory in Tangier.

Own charging network

If the goal is to target Europe, the Middle East and Africa will also be on the agenda. Except that these regions are not as well equipped with charging stations. Atlas also wants to launch on its own network, like Tesla of course, but also Togg in Turkey. There are still many uncertainties about this project, the launch of which is scheduled for 2026.
