Avocados help lower cholesterol levels

Anyone who eats an avocado every day not only increases the quality of their nutrition, but also has a good chance of lowering their “bad” LDL cholesterol somewhat.

People who ate an avocado a day for six months improved overall diet quality by eight points on a 100-point scale. In addition, total cholesterol decreased by 2.9 mg/dl and LDL cholesterol by 2.5 mg/dl. “While avocados did not affect belly fat or weight gain, the study provides evidence that avocados can be a useful addition to a balanced diet,” said Professor Penny Kris-Etherton of the University of Pennsylvania. “This is important because we know that higher diet quality is associated with a lower risk of several diseases, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers.”

Smaller studies had previously found associations between avocado consumption and lower body weight, BMI and waist circumference. These results were not confirmed by this large study of more than 1,000 overweight or obese people. Of them, half had eaten an avocado a day, while the other half continued their usual diet, eating less than two avocados a month. The fat percentage in the abdomen and around internal organs was precisely determined by MRI before and at the end of the study.
