“Bad news for the left” –

Christian Campigli

The times of a center-right that had difficulty finding a candidate for mayor, that already started as a loser and that was subordinate to the progressive universe ended on Saturday morning. Because, regardless of the final result, the formalization of Eike Schmidt as a strong man to win (also) in Florence has made us understand some steps, in some ways revolutionary. The conservatives will dictate the political agenda, outline the programmatic points and the topics to be discussed. The others will have to play from the throw-in. Thanks to the enormous charisma of the former director of the Uffizi, the extreme fragility of the center-left (divided into three coalitions), but also to a precise strategy of the moderates. That of demonstrating, in practice, that they are capable of doing well, of going to the run-off (and with a minimum gap, not exceeding five percentage points) without the need for backroom deals with other competitors in the field.

I dissolve the reservation: Eike Schmidt announces his candidacy for mayor of Florence

Not even with those potentially closest. A precise horizon, a main line dictated with the aim of making people understand how much determination there is in the desire to conquer the Tuscan capital. It is no mystery that the capture of the last red fort would mean the fall of Elly Schlein and a new shakeup within the Democratic Party. When there is a run-off, it will be the others who will have to knock on that door and ask for a meeting. And not the other way around. A change of pace resulting from the awareness of having chosen, this time, an absolute champion. And to be in government of the country and the vast majority of the regions.

The survey makes the left tremble: the red fort is at serious risk

In these two months the art historian will have to be able to highlight all the enormous contradictions of the left which has always governed Florence. From fines to safety, from the management of public money to the tram affair. It is impossible to mention the comments, which came mainly via social media, from centre-right leaders, enthusiastic about the decision of the native of Freiburg. “Excellent news for Florence, bad news for the left. We will support you with tenacity”, wrote Giovanni Donzelli, national organization manager of Fdi. Along the same lines as Forza Italia senator Maurizio Gasparri and the group leader in the Tuscany region, Marco Stella. “Florence, here is the mayor”. Matteo Salvini posted a photo of him with Schmidt, taken at the Uffizi museum. “In Florence, with the center-right always united, to win”.
