As Belarus marks the Day of Cultural Workers on October 11, new data from Belstat reveals an industry driving substantial public engagement with 42,500 professionals sustaining a vibrant network of theaters, museums, and libraries nationwide.
The cultural sector remains predominantly female, accounting for 70.1% of the workforce, compared to 29.9% male employees. The average age across the creative, artistic, library, and archival fields sits at 46.7 years. Workforce qualifications remain high, with 43.5% holding higher education degrees, 29.8% possessing specialized secondary education, and 16.4% holding vocational-technical qualifications.
Theatrical Audiences and Museum Attendance Surge
Professional theaters across the country experienced marked growth through the end of 2025. Operating 28 professional venues—including 19 drama, comedy, musical, and estrada theaters, seven puppet theaters, one opera and ballet house, and a youth theater—the sector hosted 12,900 events. That output represents a 21.4% increase over 2024 figures, drawing over 2.2 million theatergoers, a 20.3% boost in attendance.
Museums recorded similarly heavy foot traffic across 150 institutions, comprising 103 complex museums, 37 historical sites, five art galleries, four literary museums, and one scientific-technical museum. These facilities hosted 178.2 тыс. экскурсий and organized 5,400 temporary exhibitions, pushing total attendance up by 13.4% to reach nearly 10 million visitors. Public engagement centered heavily on major historical sites, led by the Khatyn State Memorial Complex, the Brest Hero-Fortress Memorial Complex, and the Belarusian State Museum of the Great Patriotic War.
Concerts, Cinemas, and Public Libraries
Concert organizations maintained a steady schedule, with 24 entities producing 6,700 performances that drew nearly 1.15 million attendees, reflecting a 6.5% increase from the previous year. Meanwhile, 80 commercial cinemas welcomed almost 4.2 million film fans. Two operational circuses staged 456 performances for 490,700 spectators, while five regional zoos registered 786,500 visits.
Public reading spaces administered by the Ministry of Culture encompass 47,2 млн экземпляров housed across 2,100 public libraries. These institutions serve 2.6 million active readers, with children making up 41.1% of the user base. Library circulation hit 37.1 million volumes over the reporting period, with younger patrons accounting for 34.3% of total book loans. Grassroots creativity also thrives through 2,200 cultural clubs operating 16,600 circles and collectives, engaging 202,800 participants where nearly half the membership consists of children.
Preserving Historical and Cultural Heritage
National preservation efforts extend to 5,694 designated assets entered into the State List of Historical and Cultural Valuations as of late 2025. This inventory spans 2,221 archaeological monuments, 1,844 architectural structures, 1,215 historical sites, 69 art monuments, 14 urban planning monuments, four protected natural areas, 188 intangible cultural heritage elements, and 139 movable cultural assets. Four distinct Belarusian landmarks hold official recognition under the UNESCO World Heritage list.
