Belgian Man Brutally Attacked in Heist-op-den-Berg: Appeal for Witnesses and Justice

Evi De Herdt, a Belgian, did not expect to find her companion in this state on Friday evening. In the columns of the Nieuwsblad, she tells how the evening of Aaron, 33, turned into a nightmare while he was having a good time with his brother in a café in Heist-op-den-Berg, in Flanders.

According to Evi’s testimony, it was when Aaron accidentally spilled a beer on the floor while dancing that things got really bad. The man holding the beer spun directly. “That person apparently thought that was enough to make it worse and get all of their friends involved,” Evi says. Because all the friends of the man who held the beer joined him to attack Aaron. “A group of around ten people started beating and stomping on Aaron. His back, his ribs, his legs and his knees: he received a stamp on each part of his body. You can see the damage on his face,” Evi laments.

Following the serious incident, Evi launched an appeal for witnesses, which has already yielded results. “Someone has already confirmed that my companion did nothing wrong,” she explains. “He was beaten because he accidentally knocked over a beer with his arm. We’re lucky he’s still here. We have three children together, it could have been much more serious,” adds Evi.

Aaron went to file a complaint on Saturday. “We will certainly go to the hospital, to have the damage officially assessed. The pain will probably get worse for him in the next few days, but I’m already happy that he’s here with me, ”says Evi again.

Evi hopes that the appeal for witnesses will identify the perpetrators. “First, justice must be done. But the authors must also repair the damage. This is pure senseless aggression for futility. If Aaron hadn’t spilled that pint, they would have picked someone else anyway,” Evi believes.

Aaron and Evi believe the attackers were under the influence of drugs when it happened.
