An Amsterdam court declared the Dutch company Big Bazar bankrupt on Tuesday, but the fate of the Belgian stores was initially unclear. According to its website, the chain has 11 stores in Belgium, all located in Flanders.

The remaining (Dutch) stores in Big Bazar will remain open “as much as possible”, according to administrators Hanneke De Coninck and Wybe Mollema. However, they do not comment on the possibility of a restart or what this implies for the approximately 900 employees and for the remaining creditors.

The brand, founded in 2007 and specializing in the sale of items at discounted prices, began to experience financial difficulties last summer. Since then, the backlog of unpaid invoices has only increased, reaching tens of millions of euros.

According to court administrators, the Dutch court, in declaring bankruptcy, ordered a reflection period of at least two months. “This means, for example, that suppliers are not allowed to collect delivered store inventory and store owners cannot order evictions. »

Incomprehension

Our colleagues from Belang van Limburg visited several affected stores. In Lommel, the employees are waiting. “What will happen to the branches in Belgium is also not clear to us… We don’t know what tomorrow has in store for us. »

If the stores therefore remain open for the moment, the future remains uncertain to say the least. And many questions remain unanswered.
