French shoppers face a stagnant average promotional budget of 283 euros amid persistent inflation concerns, yet 74 percent of consumers plan to participate in the upcoming Black Friday.

The commercial market has expanded far beyond a single weekend, transforming into a month-long event known as Black November or the Black Month.

Consumer Caution and Budget Pressures Shape the Shopping Season

Despite widespread participation—with 74 percent of surveyed French consumers intending to take part—market studies from the Boston Consulting Group, conducted among 10,220 consumers worldwide including 1,006 in France, reveal a cautious consumer base and a stagnant promotional climate. Faced with persistent inflation perceived by 83 percent of a surveyed panel and geopolitical concerns regarding Iran, the average French promotional budget stagnates at 283 euros. This figure sits roughly 20 percent below the international average of 358 euros.

Consumers are exercising strict budgetary arbitrage, directing 53 percent of planned spending toward essential purchases at the expense of holiday gifts, which account for 55 percent. In addition, trust in advertised discounts remains low, with only 46 percent of French buyers believing that Black Friday markdowns represent genuine price cuts, contrasting sharply with 62 percent in the United States. To identify a true promotion, observers advise comparing the displayed price against standard rates rather than relying solely on crossed-out figures. To shop the sales, 50 percent of consumers report using or planning to use generative artificial intelligence for direct product comparisons and targeted offer searches.

Retail intelligence platforms and live shopping trackers from outlets like Les Numériques note that consumer scouting begins well in advance, with 27 percent of shoppers starting their reconnaissance in October and 30 percent in early November. While the main Black Friday event maintains a massive 94 percent brand awareness, the subsequent Cyber Monday has experienced a sharp drop in recognition down to 53 percent. Looking forward, BCG notes that retailers must contend with an expanding group of 8 percent of French buyers who engage in spontaneous shopping without any advance planning or bargain hunting.
