Bo Bichette Returning to Mets for 2027 Season

Bo Bichette will return to the New York Mets for the 2027 season, exercising a $42 million player option rather than testing free agency as an offseason of industry uncertainty looms.

The decision brings the two-time All-Star infielder back to Queens for the second year of his three-year, $126 million contract. Bichette arrived in New York last winter after seven standout seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays, taking a short-term deal with opt-outs designed to lead back to free agency after a strong campaign.

How Bichette Saved His 2026 Season After a Dismal Start

The initial returns on the Mets’ investment were notably rough. Following the team’s unsuccessful pursuit of Kyle Tucker in free agency, New York signed Bichette and converted the former shortstop to third base. Fans at Citi Field booed him during the opening series as he struggled defensively at the hot corner and batted just .219 with five home runs and a .583 OPS through June.

Bichette found his footing at the plate and improved his glove work at third base, finishing the year with one out above average at the position. Over his final 101 games, he batted .284 with 13 home runs and a .772 OPS.

Bichette started out slow, slashing .213/.271/.229 with five homers and a 61 wRC+ through June 2, but he picked it up after that point, hitting .289/.337/.447 with 13 home runs and a 117 wRC+ over the final 99 games of the season.

He finished the 160-game slate with a .260 batting average, 18 home runs, 76 runs scored, and 78 runs batted in, posting a 96 wRC+ and 1.9 fWAR.

Why Locking in a $42 Million Salary Was a Practical Choice

While Bichette would have been one of the top available position players in a relatively weak free-agent class, his overall 2026 numbers would have made securing a matching long-term deal difficult. Yahoo Sports reported that the looming threat of a baseball work stoppage played a decisive role in his choice.

Opting out would have risked entering an uncertain market ahead of a potential lockout scheduled for December 2. Taking the guaranteed $42 million salary for 2027 proved to be a logical step. That figure places his salary among the six most expensive across Major League Baseball.

Leaving the franchise at this juncture would have triggered a $5 million buyout for the infielder, who also holds a matching $42 million player option for the 2028 campaign. Before signing with New York, his stellar tenure with Toronto featured an American League pennant run and a 2025 season where he posted a 134 wRC+ alongside 3.8 fWAR.

What Bichette’s Return Means for the Mets Roster in 2027

The Mets are coming off a deeply frustrating 74-88 campaign that ended with a last-place finish in the National League East. Despite carrying the second-highest payroll in the majors, injuries to Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor derailed the offense. Fingerlakes1 noted that the front office still faces heavy lifting elsewhere on the roster, with the starting rotation and bullpen remaining clear priorities.

Even so, retaining Bichette provides stability on the left side of the infield alongside Lindor. The lineup will also feature rookie outfielders Carson Benge and A.J. Ewing, whose encouraging debuts provided a rare bright spot during a lost year in Queens.

The initial transaction to acquire Bichette last offseason followed the departure of Pete Alonso and the trade of Brandon Nimmo, moves intended to appease a fan base eager for a major splash.
