Japan’s Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries directly appealed to the public to increase scallop consumption.

According to the Asahi Shimbun on the 30th, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ichiro Miyashita held a press conference on the 29th and held a board with the slogan ‘#EatNippon’ and appealed for scallop consumption.

The Chinese government has completely banned the import of Japanese seafood in response to the discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (called ‘treated water’ by the Japanese government) into the ocean, causing serious damage to Japanese fishermen due to scallop stocks.

In response, Minister Miyashita said, “I wish we could eat 12 scallops, one every month, but 1 at a time is a bit too much, so I hope people will support us by eating a dish containing a few scallops twice a year.”

Regarding domestic consumption, he added that he plans to work on strengthening the distribution system, saying, “I don’t know whether the products that were being exported in large quantities will be distributed domestically smoothly, and we cannot create menus if they are not supplied stably to restaurants.”

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, 179,000 tons of scallops were exported from Japan to China and Hong Kong in 2022, and domestic consumption in Japan is about 220,000 tons per year.

Additionally, last year, Japan’s seafood exports amounted to 387.3 billion yen (approximately 3.5132 trillion won), with China taking first place with 87.1 billion yen, of which scallops amounted to 46.7 billion yen.

Hong Kong, which ranked second, exported about 14 billion yen of scallops out of 75.5 billion yen in exports. Combining China and Hong Kong, 60.7 billion yen (about 550.6 billion won) worth of scallops were exported this year.
