Following Brentford’s exit from the EFL Cup after a defeat against Sunderland, Bees fan Mike Johnson voiced strong criticism regarding summer signing El Hadji Malick Diouf and the club’s recent transfer business. Describing the 21-year-old as a “£40m defender who can’t defend,” Johnson pointed to a wider breakdown in team performance during the match.
“It is such an opportunity missed with Fleetwood and Bradford progressing. Every season, I look at this competition and think ‘I would love to go to Wembley’. I would love to have the chance to get a memory for a life time,” Johnson said in remarks reported by BBC Sport. “Do not experiment in these games. I am going to care a lot more if we go out of the Carabao cup than if we finish 10th or 11th in the Premier League.”
While acknowledging that the full-back was at fault for a couple of goals, Johnson insisted the blame cannot rest solely on the young defender. He characterized the defensive collapse during a crucial 15-minute window as utterly embarrassing against Premier League opposition.
Transfer Window Strategy Under Scrutiny
Concerns over Diouf’s £40m price tag extended beyond the cup defeat, reflecting ongoing worries about Brentford’s summer transfer window strategy following a league draw against Hull City. “Before this season, I don’t think I was alone in thinking we lacked a bit of star quality either side of Igor Thiago,” Johnson noted.
The supporter highlighted missed targets and alternative acquisitions that left fans questioning the club’s direction in the market. “We were heavily linked with Said El Mala, one of the Bundesliga’s standout players last season, but it fell through. Instead, we ended up with Jaidon Anthony. We also acquired El Hadji Malick Diouf for around £40m and at the time I didn’t really see the point of that signing – and I still don’t now.”
Although defensive solidity and midfield stability have largely been positive themes this season, attacking options and squad depth remain primary talking points among the fanbase. Johnson argued that the £40m layout for a left-back appeared redundant given existing personnel:
- Keane Lewis-Potter, whom Keith Andrews reportedly rates above Diouf.
- Aaron Hickey, capable of operating on both the left and right flanks.
- Rico Henry, providing established cover in the defensive line.
Pointing to the sentiment among supporters of West Ham, where Diouf previously featured, Johnson added that spending an inflated fee on a left-back when cover is already abundant feels questionable.
