Tour favourites: Pogacar and his challengers
The big favorite is again Tadej Pogacar. The Slovenian title holder from the UAE Emirates team is usually hard to beat. The exceptional talent from Oberkrain became the second youngest tour winner in history in 2020, the youngest double champion last year – now the hat trick beckons. The 23-year-old spent most of his preparation at the altitude training camp. At the Tour of Slovenia he returned to racing – and won easily.
The team Jumbo-Visma, who have called up an extremely strong team to overthrow Pogacar, can probably best beat him. Two riders stand out: Primoz Roglic and Jonas Vingegaard. Roglic, Slovenian compatriot Pogacars, lost the 2020 Tour on the penultimate day. He insists on revenge. “We believe we can beat him,” said Roglic on Wednesday. Last year’s second Vingegeaard did well last year after Roglic’s failure and is a renewed threat to Pogacar. This also applies to the cobblestones of the “Roubaix stage” next Wednesday. The risk of a fall or defect is great.
For the other top drivers like ex-champion Geraint Thomas it is probably only about a podium place, not victory.
Tour: What are the Germans doing?
Only nine German drivers start the race, fewer than 20 years ago when there were only eight. There is no contender for the podium, the sprint stars of yesteryear are retired from cycling. However, stage victories are not excluded. Drivers like Lennard Kämna, Simon Geschke or Max Schachmann should be looking for a chance in the mountains. The fact that the new German champion Nils Politt has a tour stage win in his legs was already proven last year. As a rule, however, the Germans are required to help.
What are the key stages of the Tour?
Even the start in Denmark will be tricky. The course is mostly flat, but wind edges could cause distortions early on. It gets really tricky on the 5th stage, which leads over the dreaded cobblestones of the “Hell of the North” from Paris-Roubaix. The fights for positions will be bitter, the nervousness in the field should be great on the way over the eleven Pave sectors. In the Alps, the Alpe d’Huez spectacle awaits on the 12th stage. The most critical Pyrenees route leads up to Hautacam on the 18th stage. Two days later, the yellow flag was decided in the 40.7 km individual time trial of the penultimate stage.
Corona alarm on the tour
The invisible danger recently caused quite a stir at the Tour de Suisse. Numerous drivers and entire teams withdrew from the Tour preparation race due to a large number of cases. Before the Tour of France, the world association UCI relaxed the rules. A team will no longer be taken out of the race as soon as two drivers test positive. Belgian Tim Declercq (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) is the first nominated rider not to start due to a positive coronavirus test.
Tour Awards: What’s up for grabs?
Compared to sports such as tennis and golf, the prize money in the world’s most important cycling race is relatively small, but by cycling standards the financial incentives are enormous. The total prize money is 2.3 million euros. Whoever is on the podium in Paris in the yellow jersey will receive a prize money of no less than 500,000 euros. The winners of the green jersey and the polka dot jersey have to make do with 25,000 euros each. The best young professional in the white jersey receives 20,000 euros. A stage win brings 11,000 euros.
