Experts issue recommendations in view of the carcinogenic risk induced by UV lamps used in nail salons.

Having beautiful nails is in vogue and this trend now affects all age groups up to 90 years old. We owe this trend to the flowering of new “ nail bars » as well as many specialized sites and blogs. In this wave, semi-permanent varnishes have gradually dethroned conventional varnishes because they have the advantage of holding 2 to 3 weeks. However, a study published in the journal Clinics in Dermatology in July 2022 on the side effects induced by the application of semi-permanent nail polish aroused the concern of the Academy of Medicine. In a press release published on Wednesday, the institution therefore makes new recommendations.

The study in question was conducted with a sample of 88 women who had recourse to the application of permanent varnishes in institute. Among the effects observed, 70% (66 cases) concerned allergic skin reactions and 26.1% (23 cases) mechanical damage to the nails. But the most alarming is the report of three cases of skin cancers such as squamous cell carcinoma (3.4%) which would have appeared under the effect of exposure to certain UV nail lamps. The same observation had already been made by a study published in 2009 in the journal Archives of Dermatological Research .

More specifically, the application of semi-permanent varnishes in institutes requires the use of lamps combining UV and light-emitting diodes (LED). These lamps make it possible to fix the different layers of varnish and to dry them for a long-lasting wear. However, the type A UV rays (UVA) they emit are classified, since July 2009in the category of substances carcinogenic to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).

By penetrating the skin, UVA rays attack skin cells, the normal functioning of which is likely to be altered due to chronic exposure. “ UVA rays are known to damage the DNA of skin cells by producing free radicals, which induce the appearance of cancer-causing mutations in these cells “, underlines the Academy of Medicine. It also specifies that the risk of skin carcinoma is increased by frequent exposure to UV / LED lamps in nail salons, especially when one begins to use the application of semi-permanent varnish very young, 20 years old. on average, and over several years. Other factors, such as having fair skin (especially people with red hair) and/or an autoimmune disease, would also have an aggravating effect.

The alert is an opportunity for doctors to list certain recommendations to limit the risk of skin cancer. For the attention of frequent users of nail bars, the Academy of Medicine recommends applying sunscreen with UVA protection approximately 20 minutes before exposing the hands to UV/LED lamps, i.e. just before going to institute. In the future, warning messages coupled with recommendations will also have to appear on the instructions for UV/LED lamps intended for managers of beauty salons. At the same time, the academy insists on the need to set up information campaigns aimed at the general public and health professionals as well as encouraging the carrying out of epidemiological studies. The latter will make it possible to evaluate the evolution of cases of skin cancer in connection with prolonged exposure to this type of irradiation and therefore to define more precisely the necessary precautionary measures.
