Caribbean Screening Days

Track, track, track!

It is thanks to the efforts of all those involved in prevention, screening, support, treatment and therapeutic education that we can appreciate constant progress in the fight against HIV.

Guyana is the French department most affected by the HIV pandemic with nearly 4,000 people living with HIV.
It is estimated that more than 10% of these people do not know their HIV infection status. These elements are important drivers of the epidemic in French Guiana through the risk of secondary transmissions by people who do not yet know their diagnosis or who have monitoring difficulties.
There is talk of a “hidden reservoir” for people who do not yet know their diagnosis, where the issue of screening and early diagnosis of HIV infection is a major target for public health action in order to curb the epidemic by Guyana.
Thus, reducing the time between infection and screening is one of the keys to stemming the epidemic.

Tchimbé rèd, Pa moli, let’s not relax our efforts!

French Guiana has a diversified HIV, hepatitis and sexually transmitted infection (STI) screening offer, with several HIV, hepatitis and STI screening options accessible to the population:

  • The classic serological test is a blood test to detect the presence of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in the body. Generally, it is associated with the search for other STIs (hepatitis, syphilis, Chlamydia and Gonococcus). In addition, with the HIV TEST device, you can go to the medical analysis laboratory without a prescription, as many times as you wish, to carry out this serological test.
  • The “TROD”, Rapid Diagnostic Orientation Test. With a drop of blood taken from your fingertip, the test result is available within minutes.
  • The “self-test” is also a rapid diagnostic orientation test. It can be purchased in pharmacies without a prescription, in the form of a kit. The result is obtained after 15 minutes.

Whatever the rapid diagnostic orientation test, if it proves positive, the result must be confirmed with a conventional serological test.

How do I know where to get tested?

Thanks to the So SEXY 2023 tool (Orientation Support in SEXual Health Yana 2023), intended for a wide audience, regardless of age, sex, gender or sexual orientation.

It lists the structures throughout French Guiana where everyone can have free access:

  • SCREENING for sexually transmitted infections

ET

  • CONDOMS
  • to PrEP (pre-exposure treatment) during sex at risk of contracting HIV infection

And also

  • TPE (post-exposure treatment) following sexual intercourse at risk of contracting HIV infection
  • TREATMENTS AND VACCINES against sexually transmitted infections
  • the MORNING DAY PILL (emergency contraception)
  • to abortion (Voluntary Termination of Pregnancy)

Caribbean HIV Testing Days will take place from June 19-25, 2023.

The objective of this event is to promote screening for HIV infection in order to slow down the epidemic in the greater Caribbean region, a region particularly affected by this virus.

Since 2010, Guyana has renewed its participation in these annual days.
Various actions are therefore implemented and detailed in the attached schedule. As part of the Caribbean Screening Days, some associations are extending their actions until the end of June.
