An exhibition on Charlie Chaplin was presented all week on the pediatric floor of the CHUV, in Lausanne. And Thursday morning, Eugène Chaplin, son of the famous actor, went there to address the hospitalized children and adolescents. “It is essential to bring humor and hope to sick children, he slips. By exposing my father’s life course, we can show that anything is possible: the world falls on his head, he takes his hat, his cane and off we go again.

A space dedicated to the youngest

The educational space organizes cultural events throughout the year for children and teenagers hospitalized at the CHUV. “This place allows them to escape from the hospital context which can sometimes be painful depending on the care administered”, explains Barbara Tarditi, head educator of the service.

Eight social educators supervise and animate the place by trying to keep the link with daily life: “No treatment is carried out in this space, underlines Barbara Tarditi. Children and teenagers come, play and write their homework together.” The school opened on the same floor to ensure the schooling of young people and avoid dropping out “works particularly well with teenagers”, rejoices Barbara Tarditi.

Overcome the limits of medicine

The social and educational approach is intended to be complementary to medical expertise: “Families derive a positive experience from the hospital thanks to the support of social workers”, underlines Chantal Grandjean, head nurse of the pediatric intensive care unit. This is particularly true for the families of children who must be isolated, because of their fragile state of health: “The service goes out to meet these young people and offers them fun activities, adapted to their needs and desires”, says Chantal Grandjean.

The educational space has been created to better respond to the needs and rights of sick babies, children and adolescents stipulated in the European charter of the rights of hospitalized childrenratified by Switzerland in 1997. In this sense, the CHUV plans three educational spaces in the new buildings under construction for 2024: two of them will be dedicated to children and one to adolescents.
