Chery Automobiles to Invest $110 Million in Algerian Vehicle Assembly Plant

(Ecofin Agency) – The factory, whose production capacity will be gradually increased to reach 100,000 vehicles from the 3rd year, aims to meet the needs of the local market and export to neighboring countries.

Chinese automaker Chery plans to invest USD 110 million in the construction of a vehicle assembly plant in Algeria, its local partner Auto Leader Company announced. “ We signed an agreement with Chery Automobiles Co. Ltd, which provides for an investment of $110 million in a factory in Algeria » declared Aïmene Cheriet, CEO of Auto Leader Company, quoted by Asharq Business.

« The factory will be installed in Bordj Bou Arreridj (240 km east of Algiers). It should produce 24,000 vehicles per year during its first year of activity, 50,000 vehicles the following year and 100,000 vehicles per year thereafter. » he added, indicating that the objective is to meet the needs of the local market and to export part of the production to neighboring countries.

The project for an industrial establishment of Chery in Algeria was announced at the beginning of November 2023 by the Minister of Industry, Ali Aoun, who however did not reveal the amount of the planned investment.

As a reminder, the Algerian government has banned the importation of used vehicles to encourage the purchase of new vehicles and local production.
