Salamanders are a prized food item in China. Some fetch more than $1,500 (Rs 1.24 lakh). The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) declared salamanders as an endangered species in 2004. The Chinese government has classified the salamander as a Class II protected species. It is estimated that 100 salamanders are poached each year in Hupingshan Natural Nature Reserve alone. Fourteen nature reserves have been opened for them since 1980, but they are still few in number. In recent years, their population has suffered a further decline due to an outbreak of epizootic ranavirus infection.
