Two people died and two others suffered serious injuries during a violent overnight incident in Christchurch, prompting an immediate homicide investigation by local law enforcement, 1News reported. Emergency services rushed to an address on Olliviers Road in the east Christchurch suburb of Phillipstown at approximately 12:50 a.m.
What Police and Emergency Responders Found on Olliviers Road
Detective Inspector Nicola Reeves confirmed that two victims died at the scene inside the residential complex, which the NZ Herald identified as Guthrey Courts. Built in 1977 and managed by the Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust, the 32-unit complex became the center of a massive emergency response involving five police cars and three ambulances.
Two other individuals sustained serious injuries and were transported to hospital for urgent medical care. According to Chris Lynch Media, two additional people are currently in police custody assisting with ongoing inquiries. Authorities stated they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths at this stage, designating it an isolated incident.
Neighborhood Reactions and the Scene on the Ground
Residents living near the Phillipstown complex reported hearing unusual disruptions prior to the arrival of emergency personnel. One neighbor told RNZ that the street sounded rowdier than usual, describing sounds consistent with an argument, constant door slamming, and banging on cars. Another local resident interviewed by the NZ Herald noted that a man and a woman in their late 20s or early 30s lived at the specific property where the fatalities occurred.

Police have sought to calm public anxiety following the violence. “Police want to reassure the public there is no risk to their safety but also appreciate this incident will be deeply upsetting and unsettling for those who reside in the area,” Detective Inspector Reeves said, as quoted by the NZ Herald.
Ongoing Investigation and Appeal for Information
Investigators expect an increased police presence in the area over the coming days as forensic teams and detectives continue their scene examinations. Authorities have urged anyone with relevant information or closed-circuit television footage from the vicinity to assist the inquiry.
