CIV carrying debt is equivalent to two years of its budget – 2024-02-21 07:50:38

The Ministry of Communications, Infrastructure and Housing (CIV) carries a million-dollar debt that, according to estimates by the portfolio authorities, is higher than its two-year budget, so solving it is a complicated situation.

According to the Minister of Communications, Jasmín de la Vega, the carrying debt of Q13 billion that the CIV has has accumulated for several administrations, so, in her opinion, solving it is complicated because the resources of the portfolio They are not enough for that and funds would have to be allocated that would stop public works.

“It is a debt that the Ministry has for many periods, but it is a debt of Q13 billion, it is a debt of many years, but it is still a debt that has not become effective over time and has been growing and growing. ”De La Vega said.

The official explained that this issue is also under analysis, but stressed that it is not possible to cancel the debt, because the sum is the equivalent of the budget allocated for the portfolio for 24 months.

“First we have to review because we cannot come at this time and say, well, we are going to cancel that debt because the Ministry would have to stop for two years,” De La Vega added.

He also said that “this debt covers the Ministry’s budget for 24 months” and to cancel it “the Ministry would have to stop and the country cannot be stopped, the work cannot be stopped.”

other debts

According to De La Vega, apart from the carrying debt that the CIV has, the portfolio has other commitments to resolve.

For example, he explained that among these debts, the one owed for the piped water service stands out, which amounts to Q13 million.

“We are receiving a ministry with this dragging debt, and so many more debts. Q13 million is owed for water, suddenly we are going to run out of water too, that is, in the previous period the water fee was not paid,” commented the minister.

With the change of government, CIV authorities are analyzing various aspects in the portfolio, including contracts and projects in development.
