President Gustavo Petro assured this Monday, November 13, that Colombia will not buy weapons from countries that denied or abstained from voting on a UN resolution, promoted by Russia, that sought a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

“Colombia will not buy weapons from producing countries that have voted against or abstained from the proposal that ordered a ceasefire in Gaza at the United Nations,” the head of state stated on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

Furthermore, the president assured that Colombia will submit a request to the United Nations for Palestine to be accepted as a member state, since it is currently an observer state and is not part of the organization.

The president’s announcement about weapons means that Colombia would not buy from the main producing countries, taking into account that several of these refused to suspend hostilities in the Gaza Strip, which began more than a month ago when Hamas attacked Israel, causing an escalation of the conflict that has already left more than 10,000 dead.

This resolution was brought to the Security Council by Russia – which is carrying out an invasion of Ukraine and is also at war – but it did not have the necessary support.

The United States, France, Great Britain and Japan denied it, while Albania, Brazil, Ecuador, Ghana, Malta and Switzerland abstained.

“Before the vote, Russia’s ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, noted that without a ceasefire the opening of a humanitarian corridor will not be possible and that, being of a purely humanitarian nature, they could not understand that their project “was not supported by ‘geopolitical interests,'” the UN news agency reported on October 16.

This is not the first time that President Gustavo Petro has spoken of a blockade on weapons-producing countries that support Israel. Last week, also on his X account, regarding the bombings of hospitals in Gaza, “the governments of the United States and Europe cannot tell the world that because it is a financial ally, then if “crime against humanity permitted.”

And he added that “the southern countries must unite in an arms purchase embargo on any country that supports this genocide.”
