Avalanche of criticism among carriers and users of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles after the sharp rise in prices detected in service stations during the last days. In some service stations the price of a kilogram already reaches 2.2 euros, even exceeding that of a liter of gasoline.

This fuel, classified as ecological in the DGT’s environmental classification system, is widely used by taxi drivers and transporters, because its price, until now, was much lower than that of gasoline and diesel. In a statement the Fenadismer transport employer has criticized the «worrying rise“, Which has been translated into increases of more than 100% in the last week, according to assures, highlighting that” record prices are being reached never before seen “.

»It is expected to continue increasing in the coming weeks«, it also warns.

The average price of CNG reaches 1,939 euros / kilogram, according to the Gas Station Geoportal of the Ministry of Ecological Transition, 129.47% more than on the same day last year. The differences between stations and autonomous communities, however, are notable: from € 0.92 / kg in the cheapest station, located in the Canary Islands (where the tax burden is lower than the Peninsula) to € 2.6 / Kg in the most expensive station, located in Guarromán (Jaén).

“In a month and a half increase in the price of CNG more than double,” laments a user on the social network Twitter, attaching the tickets of his latest refueling.

CNG is made up of methane gas and is stored compressed in tanks at high pressures (between 200 to 250 bars). From Naturgy, one of the trading companies attributes the rise «to increase in the price of natural gas origin, which has caused suppliers to increase their price at origin. We hope that this situation will reverse as it is important for low emissions in transport “, they add.

In recent months there have also been strong increases in the price of diesel and gasoline, after a 50% revaluation of the Barrel of Brent, a benchmark in Europe. Gasoline became more expensive in our country by 24.5% in 2021 and diesel another 25.7%. Electricity has also suffered strong increases: the average price in 2021 was 111.4 euros per MWh, the most expensive in our history, which is 227.6% more than in 2020.
