The Dendermonde judge on Thursday rejected the third-party appeal brought by DPG Media against the ban on the publication of elements from the report drawn up against Conner Rousseau. DPG will have to pay legal costs of 1,800 euros to the president of Vooruit.
The East Flanders public prosecutor’s office confirmed on September 21 that an investigation was underway concerning the comments made by Conner Rousseau to two police officers from Saint-Nicolas (East Flanders) on the night of September 1 to 2. Het Laatste Nieuws (HLN) and VTM had prepared an article and a report on the subject with passages from the minutes, but the president of Vooruit had obtained a publication ban in summary proceedings.

DPG Media, joined shortly after by the Flemish Association of Journalists (Vlaamse Vereniging van Journalisten – VVJ), then filed a third-party appeal, demanding an end to this ban.
This applies to “any natural person, any company responsible, directly or indirectly, through any intermediary, press organ, media or audiovisual or computer support”, but has only been notified to DPG Media.
Mr. Rousseau, who admitted to having incited the police to use their batons against the Roma to gain respect from them, apologized and has since met members of this community.
The summary judge indicates that he has rejected DPG Media’s third-party opposition appeal and the media company must pay legal fees of 1,800 euros to the party president for the costs of the procedure. “The president considered that neither the Constitution nor the Convention on Human Rights opposes a preventive ban on publication applicable in all circumstances,” explained press magistrate Sofie Van Ginderdeuren.
