MINISTER of Foreign Affairs (Menlu) Retno Marsudi discussed the Middle East situation with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian via telephone, Monday (15/4). These talks took place amid increasing tensions in the region, especially after Iran launched a retaliatory attack on Israeli territory last weekend.

“I express my concern over the worrying situation in the Middle East, and call on all relevant countries to exercise restraint and reduce tensions,” wrote Retno on X’s social media account.

He also admitted that he had contacted a number of foreign ministers in the Middle East such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, and Europe such as the Netherlands and Germany. He called on these countries to pressure Iran and Israel so that they do not fall into war.

In her communication with the Head of European Union (EU) Foreign Policy Josep Borrell and other Blue Continent officials, Retno emphasized that war would not provide benefits. Previously, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also urged the UN Security Council to act immediately to reduce tensions and continue efforts to create peace in the Middle East.

That includes ending the illegal occupation of Palestine and various violations of international law by Israel. A just resolution of the Palestinian problem through a two-state solution will be the key to creating regional security stability.

This ministry also issued an appeal to Indonesian citizens (WNI) regarding the heated situation in the Middle East. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working with representatives in the Middle East to continue monitoring the escalation that is taking place.

It is known that Amirabdollahian spoke via telephone with Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud. The two also discussed the latest developments in the area.

To Saudi Arabia, Amirabdollahian highlighted diplomatic efforts to seek justice regarding Israel’s aggressive and criminal actions. Iran refers to the Israeli attack that destroyed the Tehran consulate building in Damascus, Syria on April 1.

The attack was the reason why Iran launched a retaliatory operation into Israeli territory. Iran emphasized that the retaliatory action was a right of self-defense in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter. (Z-3)
