Contractor suicide; Karnataka Minister KS Eshwarappa resigns National | Deshabhimani

Karnataka Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister KS Eshwarappa has resigned following a case filed against him for allegedly inciting a contractor to commit suicide in Udupi. The decision was taken after strong protests against Ishwarappa’s resignation. KS Eshwarappa said that the resignation letter will be handed over to the Chief Minister tomorrow and thanked everyone for their cooperation. Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has made it clear that he will not seek resignation.

Santosh K Patil, a contractor from Belagavi district, was found dead after consuming poison in Udupi. The suicide came after Patil sent a message to the media that Ishwarappa was responsible for his death. Santosh had earlier alleged that Ishwarappa had demanded a 40 per cent commission to change the work bill of Rs 4 crore under his department. He also wrote a letter to the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister clarifying the matter. However, Santosh Patil committed suicide out of resentment that no action had been taken.

Santosh’s brother Prashant Patil registered an FIR against the minister on Tuesday night. The minister’s personal staff members Ramesh and Basavaraj are also accused in the case. But Ishwarappa was adamant that he would not resign. But there was strong opposition from the opposition. The Karnataka State Contractors Association has also warned that the state-wide construction work will be halted if no action is taken. It was after this that Ishwarappa announced his resignation dramatically.
