A panel of experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) meets this Thursday (4/5) to assess whether the Covid-19 pandemic still constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), the highest level warning given to a disease.
The expert panel has been meeting periodically since January 2020 and this is the 15th meeting. There is still no consensus among experts on the repeal of the pandemic state, but it is expected that the consistent decline in the numbers of new cases and deaths from Covid-19 will contribute to a favorable opinion on the end of the pandemic. The final decision is the prerogative of WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
On January 30, 2020, after the committee’s second meeting, Ghebreyesus accepted the experts’ advice that the Covid-19 outbreak constituted a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). Since then, new meetings have been held every three months to review the characteristics of the pandemic.
Expectation is great
The WHO leader has often stated that he hopes to announce the end of the emergency situation over the coronavirus in 2023. At the last press conference, held on April 26, Ghebreyesus drew attention to the decline in the numbers of new cases and deaths caused by the disease.
“We remain hopeful that at some point this year we will be able to declare an end to Covid-19 as a public health emergency of international concern,” he said.
