  • The Swiss faction in Serie A is growing.

  • Charles Pickel is now playing for Cremonese.

  • The big Nati stars also congratulate.

Six Swiss were active in Serie A last season. Including the Nati stars Rodriguez, Freuler, Zakaria and Aebischer. A seventh name will be added next season. Former FCB junior and GC player Charles Pickel signed a contract with promoted team Cremonese last week.

Last season, the 25-year-old was a key player with Famalicão in the Portuguese top flight. The defensive midfielder missed the team just two league games. No wonder he increased his market value to 2.5 million Swiss francs. As Pickel tells 20 Minuten, there have been a few offers from the top leagues, including Bundesliga clubs. But the Solothurn has opted for Cremonese.

Transfer for four million

Pickel wants to fight for a regular place as quickly as possible and play many games. He says: “Of course, the chance of a regular place at Cremonese is greater. But it’s difficult everywhere. I’m here to learn and work and to take a step forward in my career.” The Italian club pays a good four million Swiss francs for pimples. He is considered the record transfer of the climber. Much pressure? “I can’t determine the numbers. I’ve always been better with pressure and if that’s pressure, I’m happy to take it with me.”

The contract with the Italian promoted team from Cremona now runs for four years. This is also a security for his family. Pickel has two children with his fiancée. The son is only four months old. His family is currently still in Portugal and will remain there for the time being. “They stay there until I find an apartment or a house. It’s very difficult in the hotel now,” explains Pickel. The change from Famalicão is not easy for his partner. Pickel: “She’s used to change with me, but she’s also a bit sad. We enjoyed a really nice life in Portugal.”

Make the family proud with a national squad

Numerous Nati stars such as Breel Embolo, Eray Cömert and Manuel Akanji, whom he has known for a long time, also congratulated him on his move to Serie A. “I was very happy, these are my friends I’ve known for a long time,” says Pickel. With the move to the top European league, will assignments with the national team suddenly become an issue? So far, the 25-year-old has played ten games for Switzerland’s U-20 team. The midfielder says: “The national team is of course a big dream for me. I could make my whole family proud that way.” However, the focus is currently on the club. He wants to bring his performance in the club first. “If it happens then, thank God, but I have to keep both feet on the ground,” Pickel continued.

A transfer from his friend Akanji to Serie A would also welcome Pimple. “He’s already playing at a strong club. It depends on his career. Time will tell, but of course I would be happy.” With Santiago Ascacíbar, a big name from the Bundesliga recently switched to Cremonese. The four-time Argentina international comes to Pickel’s team on loan and, like Pickel, is at home in defensive midfield. No problem for Pickel: “You want to play in a competitive team. When players like that come, you’re happy and you can learn from them.”

Cremonese’s goal this season is simple – to stay up. The former Hopper doesn’t have a team he’s most looking forward to: “It’s a final almost every weekend. I look forward to every game. Nothing is more important, for us it’s always about everything.” Pickel will probably be in action for the first time in a competitive game on August 8th. Then the season begins for Cremonese with a cup game.
