Tom Pidcock won the 58th edition of the Amstel Gold Race ahead of Marc Hirschi and Tiesj Benoot, becoming the first Briton in history to triumph in this Classic. The French Paul Lapeira, Valentin Madouas and Quentin Pacher appear in the top 10.

Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers), who has taken pride of place in the Amstel Gold Race in recent years, has finally managed to win this Classic. On the podium last year behind Tadej Pogacar and Ben Healy, he failed even closer in 2021 behind Wout Van Aert. This Sunday, with a Homeric effort at the end of 253.6 kilometers, he took the lead over Marc Hirschi (UAE Team Emirates) and Tiesj Benoot (Visma-Lease a Bike) to win this 58th edition of the Amstel, becoming the first Briton to enter the prize list. Behind this trio and Mauri Vansevenant (Soudal-Quick Step), Paul Lapeira (Décathlon-AG2R La Mondiale) and Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ) respectively finished the race in 5th and 6th places.

The situation resolved a little less than 50 kilometers from the finish when three men, including Paul Lapeira, attacked. Gradually, the pursuers sensed the right move to escape and reach the front of the race. They formed the day’s breakaway of twelve with almost a minute in advance less than 20 kilometers from Berg en Terblijt. Several elements, including Pello Bilbao (Bahrain-Victorious) especially on the downhill, tried to make it through. But it’s a quartet which lost the eight traveling companions 12 kilometers from the goal with the happy epilogue for Tom Pidcock. The fight for places of honor saw Bauke Mollema take 7th position behind Valentin Madouas and in front of another Habs, Quentin Pacher (Groupama-FDJ), 8th.

Van der Poel, a day sans

The peloton sprint, arriving eleven seconds late, went to Michael Matthews (Jayco AlUla). Romain Grégoire is not far away, 12th, while Benoît Cosnefroy (Décathlon-AG2R La Mondiale) completed his effort in 16th place. Announced as the big favorite of the day, Mathieu Van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) remained harmless throughout the day. Probably on a day without, the winner of the 2019 edition ranked 22nd.
