Dana Altman Retires as Oregon Basketball Head Coach After 16 Seasons

Longtime Oregon men’s basketball coach Dana Altman announced his sudden retirement on Wednesday, Oct. 7, stepping down just eight days before the Ducks’ first preseason game and leaving behind a 16-year legacy in Eugene as the winningest coach in program history. Altman, 68, finished his career with 792 Division I wins across 37 seasons, ranking 15th on the NCAA’s all-time wins list.

Mirror Check That Sparked a Sudden Exit

The decision caught the college basketball world entirely off guard, arriving in the wake of a 12–20 campaign during the 2025–26 season. Nearly the entire roster had turned over during the offseason, and after a two-week vacation in August, Altman thought his energy would return. When it didn’t, he realized he could no longer meet his own standard of accountability.

“I always ask the players to look in the mirror and ask themselves if they’re giving everything they have to be their best,” Altman said during a hastily arranged press conference in Eugene. “And I looked in the mirror and I’d be a hypocrite if I lied to myself and said I was the best coach for the job.” He admitted that while minor health concerns played a small role, the ultimate catalyst was simply that after 37 years as a head coach, he just didn’t have the drive in him anymore.

Altman Steps Aside for Stubblefield at Oregon

Reflecting on his changing relationship with the sport, Altman pointed to a comment from Michigan State coach Tom Izzo regarding the moment a coach’s energy drops. Altman knew it was time to step aside. He handed the reins to Stubblefield, who spent 13 of Altman’s 16 seasons at Oregon before serving as DePaul’s head coach from 2021 to 2024 and returning to Eugene in 2024.

Legacy and the Next Chapter in Eugene

Altman leaves Oregon with an impressive 382–182 record (.677 winning percentage) across 16 seasons, alongside four Pac-12 regular-season titles and four conference tournament crowns. Before his tenure in Eugene, he coached at Marshall, Kansas State, and Creighton, where he also spent 16 years before taking over the Ducks in 2010. During Wednesday’s emotional press conference, surrounded by former player Jordan Bell and members of the current roster, Altman urged his players to enjoy what they have because it is a great place.

Stubblefield takes charge of the program immediately, with his debut as interim head coach set for the Nov. 2 season opener against Montana.
