US actress Anne Heche has died after a serious car accident. The 53-year-old was “peacefully disconnected from life-support equipment,” said her spokeswoman Holly Baird on Sunday evening. Heche had previously been declared brain dead. However, she remained on life support equipment to check if her organs were suitable for future donation. This test lasted nine days.
On August 5, the 53-year-old drove her car at high speed into a house in a western Los Angeles neighborhood. A fire broke out when the seriously injured woman was trapped in the car. Heche was taken to the hospital with severe burns. On Tuesday it was said that the patient had been in a coma since the accident. Police previously announced that Heche was under investigation for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Her blood was drawn, said a spokesman for the Los Angeles police, Jeff Lee. Drugs were found in her body.
Ellen DeGeneres responds
Heche was one of the biggest Hollywood stars in the late 90s. In the crime drama “Donnie Brasco” she played alongside Johnny Depp, in “Six Days, Seven Nights” she stood in front of the camera with Harrison Ford. She is also known from TV series such as “Chicago PD” and “Ally McBeal”. In her 2001 memoir, the actress addressed her years of struggles with mental health issues and an abusive childhood.
She is also known for her relationship with talk show host Ellen DeGeneres from 1997 to 2000. “This is a sad day,” DeGeneres tweeted on Friday. “I send all my love to Anne’s children, family and friends.”
Heche was later married to cinematographer Coleman Laffoon.
