With the presence of one hundred and thirty-five teachers, students and non-teachers, in the hall of the Faculty of Medicine, the first Open Town Hall was held yesterday in defense of the university, science and public health. The initiative was launched by the Executive Board of AGD UBA as a self-convening proposal and aimed at all sectors of the university that agreed on the need to debate and resolve actions against the adjustment – salary and budget – of the national government and the IMF and the attack on the university and science proposed by the right and extreme right.

The proposal was taken by the non-teaching Internal Commission of Social Sciences, the Veterinary and Pharmacy student centers of the UBA, Movement and Visuals of the UNA, and student centers of the tertiary institutes of the JVG, Alicia and Grierson. Also by non-teaching groups with whom, together with the Social Affairs intern, we have been agreeing in the defense of Dosuba and the right of UBA retirees to maintain their social work, and student and teaching groups (Unión de Juventudes por el Socialismo, PTS Youth, MST Socialist Youth and Socialist Left). Among the 25 interventions were also the adhesion of the union secretariat of Unanm, belonging to Conadu, of the internal Boards of ATE Conicet de Saavedra 15, Filosofía y Letras y Exactas and the Coordinator Enough of False Solutions, both representatives of common struggles with AGD UBA.

La Cámpora and Patria Grande had also participated in the first preparatory meeting, both for their teaching and student representations. However, despite specific invitations, they finally did not participate yesterday. Surely the pressure to close ranks behind the Massa-Rossi formula was felt, withdrawing them from this united front proposal to go out to fight in defense of the achievements of university students and workers and of the university itself, all objectives questioned by the agreements with the Fund. However, there was and is no condition for the vote to fight together; they did not accept mobilization as a united front. The other teaching unions of the UBA (Aduba and Feduba) and the student centers not run by the left were not in the game either.

The different teaching, non-teaching and student interventions, in addition to referring to the context of adjustment due to the government’s application of the IMF policy and the offensive against public education and health and science and technology, formed a whole list of complaints from the salary – since teachers and non-teachers were excluded from the bonus despite having received an increase below inflation – to the unconsulted reform of study plans, including infrastructure issues and lack of democratization in the university. In the debate we reflected the rejection by a majority in the Conadu H Congress of the government’s latest increase proposal of only 10% in September. There was total agreement on the need to strengthen organization and mobilization to face the offensive, defend the rights won and fight for the entire list of demands.

Finally, at the end, an action plan was voted unanimously: promote a national university march, participate with everyone on 9/28 in defense of safe and free legal abortion, hold a press conference in front of the Ministry of Education and a day of public classes on 10/12 throughout the UBA. Both the holding of the Open Town Hall and these first actions are the starting point of a reorganization of the university movement to face the current adjustment and the worsening of an offensive against our rights in the future.
