Deficiency of 4 vitamins and minerals may be the reason behind premature graying

Like skin color, hair pigmentation is greatly affected by melanin. The material relies on many other nutrients to perform its normal function.

When the body is deficient in any particular nutrient, it may fail to deliver the dye to the hair. The good news is that in some cases, graying of hair can be corrected with nutritional supplements if it is treated early enough.

The vast majority of people can expect to start graying in their 30s, although some white streaks may appear in their late 20s.

At this early stage of graying, the condition may be more reversible.

A person is more likely to successfully reverse gray hair if the underlying cause is treated appropriately.

Exposure to pollutants, genetics, age, stress and smoking can all cause hair to turn gray.

Research has also shown that it is common to be deficient in copper, iron, calcium or vitamin B12 if you suffer from premature graying.

Sometimes, healthcare practitioners fail to recognize these conditions as a cause, because symptoms of deficiency in these vitamins and minerals are often vague.

ADA Health explains: “Symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency can develop slowly and worsen over time. People with vitamin B12 deficiency without anemia may have some symptoms. Some may not experience symptoms, even though their levels of the vitamin are low.”

And in 2018, the International Journal of Trichology looked at a sample of 60 patients with premature graying of hair to understand the extent to which nutritional deficiencies are involved.

The researchers pointed out that: “The levels of iron, copper and calcium in the blood decrease in conjunction with premature graying of hair and are associated with its severity. Early graying may be an indication that the hair is not getting enough nutrients and minerals.”

However, more studies are needed to find the mechanisms underlying this relationship, according to the researchers.

Although not mentioned in the study, vitamin B12 deficiency is one of the most common causes of premature graying.

Historically, researchers have found that vitamin B12 deficiency coincides with other deficiencies of folic acid and biotin in the hair of people who are beginning to turn gray.

It should be noted that if a vitamin deficiency is the cause of graying, nutritional supplements may not be able to completely reverse graying, but they may be able to slow the process.

Medicine Net explains: “Premature graying can only be reversed with vitamin B12 supplementation if a vitamin B12 deficiency is the cause. If your graying is due to other factors, such as genetics, zinc deficiency, and medication, your graying cannot be reversed.”

Anyone whose hair turns gray early is advised to see a doctor to determine the underlying cause.

A person may have other underlying causes for premature graying, so a proper diagnosis is essential for treatment.
