Atlanta – Democrat Raphael Warnock won the runoff election for the Georgia Senate seat, as several US media predicted on Wednesday night. Warnock was ahead by around 1.6 percentage points when almost all votes were counted – those still outstanding were primarily identified in the deeply liberal constituencies of the capital Atlanta. It was assumed that Warnock would ultimately be around two to three percentage points ahead of his arch-conservative opponent Herschel Walker, who had supported ex-President Donald Trump. Walker gave a convoluted speech after the decision, in which he repeatedly called upon God and thanked his followers. Without naming Warnock or congratulating him, he called for “faith in our elected officials,” which the media interpreted as an admission of defeat.
