France is a European leader in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) by gendarmes. According to a report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), France is the first European country in the use of AI by the gendarmerie.

The French gendarmerie uses AI in many areas

In terms of monitoring, detection of crimes and the resolution of surveys.

We can cite 4 examples:

  • An intelligent monitoring system that uses AI to analyze images and videos from surveillance cameras in order to detect suspicious behavior;
  • A Deepfake detection tool that uses AI to identify Deepfakes. Deepfakes are video or audio recordings made or modified using artificial intelligence;
  • A facial recognition system that uses AI to identify people from their facial characteristics;
  • A machine translation system that uses AI to translate documents and conversations into different languages.

The French gendarmerie is also engaged in AI research and development projects

The national gendarmerie participated in the Waicf (World Artificial Intelligence Cannes Festival) show, an unmissable meeting of artificial intelligence actors. A logical presence, as she has been working on these questions for several years, in multiple directions. But also to conferences including that with the Sorbonne and the Montaigne Institute. More recently, the national gendarmerie actively participated in the Cybermois, a European initiative launched in 2011. The objective of the Cybermois is to raise public awareness of the risks linked to digital and to offer advice to protect itself.

The national gendarmerie participated in CyberMois in different ways:

  • Distribution of safety tips

The national gendarmerie has published security advice on its website and on its social networks. These advice focused on subjects such as personal data protection, cyber attacks and children’s safety on the Internet.

  • Event planning

The national gendarmerie has organized events to raise public awareness of digital risks. These events have included conferences, workshops and demonstrations.

  • Participation in awareness campaigns

The national gendarmerie participated in awareness campaigns carried out by other organizations, such as ANSSI and Cybermalvence.gouv.fr.

Quality AI training

One of the factors that explains the leading position of France in terms of using the AI by gendarmes is the quality of AI training provided to gendarmes. The French gendarmerie offers AI training which generally lasts a few weeks and is accessible to all gendarmes, regardless of their rank or their specialty.

The training is divided into two modules:

  • Module 1 covers the basics of AI, such as machine learning and natural language processing.
  • Module 2 is more specific to the gendarmerie and addresses concrete AI applications, such as monitoring, detection of crimes and investigative resolution.

The training is provided by AI experts from the gendarmerie and outside. It combines theoretical lessons and practical exercises.

The French gendarmerie has an ambitious strategy in terms of using AI. The objective of this strategy is to make French gendarmerie a modern and effective gendarmerie force, capable of dealing with the challenges of the 21st century.
