The public will thus be able to discover The man who Laughsa work inspired by the universe of Victor Hugo, on May 31; L’adorable Belboul, an Italian-style satirical comedy, on June 6; And Miguelan opera that tells the story of a Spanish marquise in love with a French colonel during the Spanish War of Independence, on June 14.

All the concerts will be offered at the Salle Claude-Champagne of the Université de Montréal.

Advocacy for Quebec opera

For Marc Boucher, general and artistic director of the Festival Classica, the idea of founding a new opera stems from an observation very simple : There are not enough professional opera performances in Quebec for today’s generation of singers to make a living from this art.

According to him, the singers of the Belle Province must go into international exile to hope to live from their art, an opinion shared by several classical artists. Thus, in the first three shows of the NOM22 of the 25 roles will be played by performers from Quebec, including 15 in the lead role.

The performances of the Nouvel Opéra Métropolitain will be held in the Salle Claude-Champagne at the Université de Montréal.

The ensemble’s desire to offer professional opportunities to local artists goes hand in hand with its environmental vocation. He wants to limit his greenhouse gas emissions, and therefore rely as little as possible on the temporary hiring of artists from abroad for his concerts.

On the scenography side, the NOM will also bet on digital projections rather than physical sets, always with this idea of reducing its environmental footprint.

« The planet of the arts wonders how we will position ourselves in the future [sur la question environnementale]. There are countries that are more advanced than us in this thinking, and people are starting to take these effects into account. »

A quote from Marc Boucher, general and artistic director of the Festival Classica

Towards a starmania under the stars?

Marc Boucher is ambitious. Eventually, it wants to double or even triple the lyric art offer in Montreal, in particular by offering operettas taken from musicals, such as South Pacific or The king and me. It intends to offer performances outside the seasons of established opera houses, such as the Opéra de Montréal, and also hopes to hold a new opera festival in Montreal as early as June 2024.

And the highlight of the show: a starmania under the stars lyrical and symphonic is being prepared for that same year, under the direction of Jacques Lacombe with the Orchester Classique de Montréal. Marc Boucher is still looking for financial support for this new offering.

The cast of the show is complete, according to Marc Boucher, and includes only singers and singers from Quebec.
