For Marc Boucher, general and artistic director of the Festival Classica, the idea of founding a new opera stems from an observation very simple
: There are not enough professional opera performances in Quebec for today’s generation of singers to make a living from this art.
According to him, the singers of the Belle Province must go into international exile to hope to live from their art, an opinion shared by several classical artists. Thus, in the first three shows of the NOM22 of the 25 roles will be played by performers from Quebec, including 15 in the lead role.
The ensemble’s desire to offer professional opportunities to local artists goes hand in hand with its environmental vocation. He wants to limit his greenhouse gas emissions, and therefore rely as little as possible on the temporary hiring of artists from abroad for his concerts.
On the scenography side, the NOM will also bet on digital projections rather than physical sets, always with this idea of reducing its environmental footprint.

Towards a starmania under the stars?
Marc Boucher is ambitious. It intends to offer performances outside the seasons of established opera houses, such as the Opéra de Montréal, and also hopes to hold a new opera festival in Montreal as early as June 2024.
