Emergency SOS via satellite helps rescue students trapped in canyon

Three students from Brigham Young University in Utah (in the United States) were trapped in a canyon and were saved thanks to the Emergency SOS via satellite of an iPhone 14 that was with one of them.

The students had decided to travel before graduation to a visiting area in San Rafael Swell. As they already practiced canyoneering, they decided to check out a certain area and ended up trapped in a place with cold and deep water.

Students said they did extensive research on the canyon but ran into problems. “We suspect that the exceptionally wet winter in Utah has altered the canyon, resulting in a much more difficult scenario than we were prepared for,” said Jeremy Mumford, one of the rescuers.

According to information from the TO TV, the students were stuck for almost an hour trying to lift their backpacks to a “ledge” of the rock. “I started to panic and freeze,” Mumford said.

After continuing on and finding another deep area, they were unable to proceed further. At that moment, according to another student, they had already been in the cold water for about three hours and some of them were showing signs of hypothermia.

Fortunately, a member of the group, Stephen Watts, brought his iPhone 14. Every 20 minutes, a satellite would align with your location within the canyon. In this way, they were able to use the satellite Emergency SOS to send text messages asking for help.

After much persistence, the students managed to find a place to sit and lit a fire while waiting for the emergency services to arrive.

Moved, one of the students thanked them for the rescue: “I am very grateful to them and would have liked to have met them under different circumstances. They seem like amazing people, but again, a huge, huge thank you.”
